Inga Fricke with McKamey Animal Center said intake numbers were high last year and it's a problem with shelters across the country.

MAC officials said the dog, nicknamed Sweet Pea, managed to jump several 6' fences while in the play yard last week and escaped the facility. 

According to MAC, Asha died days after she was discovered suffering from dehydration and several wounds near the dam at Highway 513.

Over 100 dogs are currently available for adoption at MAC.

"Chattanooga has lost one of its most colorful citizens, but her lasting impression on the community leaves a legacy that will never fade away."

Pets can experience symptoms from being exposed to the cold or wind too long, like windburn, hypothermia, and frostbite.

Organizers at McKamey Animal Center are hoping to send out some of their longest residents at the shelter to have a much-needed Thanksgiving break.

MAC officials say, thanks to a generous donor, the senior pets at the shelter hope to find their new homes this month.

There are some do's and don'ts for the holiday season this year. 

Adoption fees for senior dogs and cats will continue to be waived through October 15.
