The Notre Dame boys’ basketball team made school history in 2023 when they qualified for the state championship game for the first time ever. The team ultimately fell short, but as is often the case, it’s only fueled the fire.

Particularly, in star senior Cole McCormick. McCormick was an all-state selection last season after a breakout junior year. Such a successful campaign it led to a scholarship with the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

His senior season didn’t start as planned though. It began, on the bench.

McCormick hurt both of his wrists in a scrimmage before the season. His senior year was nearly in jeopardy, but he was able to battle back to make a return just after Christmas.

It was a tough time for McCormick who provided some self-evaluation on his leadership skills. He said he wasn’t always the best leader at times since he was on the bench, rather than on the floor. It was a great learning opportunity for the young man as he looks to lead the Irish back to the state title game.

Notre Dame enters the bulk of district play a bit behind the eight ball, if you will. Looking at their record (4-18) you’d think it was a lost season. The Irish may be down on their luck, but they’re not down on their determination.

Tournament season is right around the corner and the squad knows they still have everything in front of them. Especially with their leader in McCormick back where he belongs – in the lineup.
