With families heading to the beach for spring break, a Beach Safety Lieutenant is sharing tips to keep you safe.
Three major safety concerns that officials typically see are rip currents, missing kids, and medical emergencies.
Rip currents are very dangerous and can be spotted if you look for deep calm water. If you get stuck in one, it's suggested to try to float or swim parallel to the current and remember not to panic.
"In our area our rip currents can move around quite a bit, they're what we call flash rip currents and they can be very hard to spot," said Brandon Brown, Beach Safety Lieutenant. "But once you know how to spot them and how to get out of them, they can be very easily avoided."
Kids getting lost is also a major issue. They suggest taking a photo of your children each day incase they get lost.
The final tip is to keep drinking water if you're out in the sun. Experts say avoiding dehydration is key.
