Murphy USA gas station in LaFayette, GA

Drivers in Georgia accidentally filled up with diesel fuel this past Thursday. Murphy U-S-A says that a diesel fuel tank was mistakenly placed into an underground storage tank meant for unleaded fuel. Gasoline and diesel engines use two completely different combustion systems and using the wrong fuel can cause severe issues to your vehicle.

Local mechanic John Memmer said engine misfires could be a sign that the wrong fuel has entered a vehicle's gas tank.

"The biggest thing that you will notice, especially in a gasoline vehicle is that it will start having misfires, the engine will kind of start coughing, jerking, and things of that nature."

If you suspect that you have filled your car with the wrong type of fuel, the best thing to do is to stop and call a tow truck.

"Have your vehicle towed to your service facility, a good service facility, and have them remove the tank or have access to the tank, pull the pump out and drain all the fuel out of the tank and go ahead and replace the pump while your that to go ahead and cover all bases," said Memmer.

Murphy USA has confirmed that diesel fuel was placed into an unleaded fuel underground storage tank at the Murphy USA location on Highway 27 in LaFayette, Ga.
