It’s no secret the Baylor School athletics department takes pride in the amount of state championships their teams win. The historic run the softball team is on, the baseball team’s run of championships, the swim program’s prestige, even the football team broke a long state title drought in 2022.
When it comes to the boys’ basketball program, there’s a lot of banners, none that say state champions.
The 2023-24 team is out to change it as they’re one win from their first trip to the final four since 2020.
The Red Raiders have been having quite the season behind an all-around cast of players. Senior Nyziah Whaley is one of them as he’s turning in his best year yet.
Whaley is from Cleveland, TN and elected to go to high school at the Baylor School. Head coach Mark Price and their basketball program is a big reason for his decision to travel nearly 45 minutes to school every day.
Whaley comes from a family of athletes, but not so many basketball players. It’s a bond he shares with his grandfather who was a star for Bradley Central High School back in his day.
His confidence and commitment on the court shine in his play. It’s elevated the team as they aim to make school history.
The Red Raiders will hit the road to take on Pope John Paul II on Saturday, February 24th at 6 p.m. in the Division-II Class AA state quarterfinals. Baylor beat the Knights back on December 4th 73-69 inside Duke Arena. If they beat them on Saturday, they’ll be back in the final four for the first time in four years.
